Originally founded in 1891, the company gradually evolved into specialist electrical and refrigerated equipment. Due to their location in the Laurieston area of Edinburgh, the main customer then was the relatively new Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. With developments in temperature control, since the 1930s the company has concentrated on refrigerated equipment especially medical; laboratory, this again can be traced to location of premises and the fact that Edinburgh has a relatively large university with a strong emphasis on medical research.

I recently purchased from Appleton Woods a ZEISS Axiolab 5 compound microscope with a range of bright field and phase contrast objectives and a camera attachment. The service has been excellent.
