Microbiology Society Annual Conference 2026 Highlights
Highlights from the Microbiology Society Annual Conference 2026
The Appleton Woods team is always out and about, staying connected with the latest developments in the life sciences industry. One of the highlights of April was the trip our Microscopy Specialist, Dr Harriet Giddings, took to Belfast to attend the Microbiology Society Annual Conference 2026, alongside our colleagues David and Winfried from MetaSystems.
This flagship event brought together microbiology researchers, students, and industry professionals across the world, creating a vibrant environment for collaboration, learning and innovation in microbiology diagnostics.
A Dynamic Experience at the Microbiology Society Annual Conference 2026
Over four days, the ICC Belfast was transformed into a hub of scientific exchange. The conference was packed with insightful talks, poster sessions, and networking opportunities, with many discussions centred around the future of microbiology and emerging diagnostic solutions.
Having previously attended as a PhD student, Harriet particularly enjoyed returning as an Appleton Woods representative. This time, she had the opportunity to connect with researchers and discuss how we support laboratory workflows through our portfolio of consumables, reagents, equipment, and advanced microscopy solutions.
Of course, the experience wasn't just about science; the steady flow of coffee, cookies, and snacks throughout the day also helped keep energy levels high and conversations flowing.
Advancing Microscopy with MetaSystems
A key highlight for Harriet was spending time with MetaSystems and exploring their applications for automated microscopy in microbiology diagnostics.
These technologies are designed to support critical tasks such as:
- Detection of acid-fast bacteria, including Tuberculosis
- Characterisation of Gram-stained bacteria
- Identification of bacterial morphology
MetaSystems offers a fully automated workflow, where multiple slides are loaded via magazines onto the microscope stage. The system automatically applies oil, scans each slide, and captures high-quality images.
From there, powerful software uses deep neural networks (DNNs) and customisation tools to assist with pre-classification and detection. This includes identifying Auramine-stained bacteria and distinguishing between different bacterial types, helping to improve both efficiency and diagnostic accuracy in the lab.
The Future of Microbiology Diagnostics
Spending time with MetaSystems also highlighted a broader trend: traditional microbiology techniques such as Gram staining and acid-fast staining are rapidly evolving.
These methods are no longer standalone processes. Instead, they are becoming part of fully integrated, automated workflows that combine:
- Imaging
- Analysis
- Decision-making
As a result, laboratories can streamline processes, reduce manual workload, and enhance the reliability of results.
The Microbiology Society Annual Conference 2026 clearly demonstrated how far the field has progressed, and how innovations in microscopy and automation are shaping the future of microbiology diagnostics.
