Established in 1967 by Derek and June Brown, Appleton Woods Ltd initially manufactured stainless steel canisters for sterilising laboratory glassware.
Derek Brown had worked in the Metallurgy Department at the University of Birmingham and had seen an opportunity to supply metalware to his colleagues in the Microbiology Department. The portfolio of products grew to include the glassware being used, and then into single-use disposable plasticware as technologies changed. Today, the company remains an independent family owned business and is run by the founders’ son, Chris Brown.
The product portfolio has developed to encompass a comprehensive range of Equipment, Consumables and Reagents and is supplied to Life Science Laboratories across the UK. The company’s focus is very much on research environments in Universities and Research Institutes, Biotech Companies and Clinical Laboratories, where Its customers are working to understand, diagnose and treat human health and disease. The company’s strength is in providing a deep technical understanding of the work being carried out by its customers and adding a strong consultative selling and customer service ethic.
The company re-located to modern premises in Kings Norton, South West Birmingham in 2014. This central location allows deliveries using the company’s own vans to most parts of the UK. New Lindon House (Lindon being another family surname) offers modern professional office accommodation for the Sales and Marketing team, alongside Customer Services and the Warehouse and Distribution operation
